A Valuable Book to Sell Online ~ Julia Child Mastering French Cooking

by Julie Anna on August 12, 2009

julia child cookbook valuable bookI had a very productive day yesterday.  I cleaned two ‘to be researched, tossed or listed” bookshelves. I listed more than $1k worth of media and tossed four boxes of books that have been sitting far too long. :) I wrote in my Book Jewels subscription issue that if you had any Julia Child cookbooks sitting on your shelves that you need to get them listed.

I perused my shelves shortly after writing that last month and did not see my Mastering the Art of French Cooking Vol 1 which we sell often and usually have in inventory or to be listed – no Mastering anywhere (one of our bread and butter books for many many years). I did, however, find the one I thought I had in the wings while listing yesterday.

Yay! I threw it up for a higher than any at the time listed price thinking in seven days I’d come down (there were two overpriced by our over pricing friends). I listed the cook book last night at about 7 pm and it sold less than eight hours later! Woke up to the sale.

Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume Onecookbook
Quantity: 1
Merchant SKU: 090811018
ASIN: B0018TVEAW
Order-Item ID: 34979520492386
Condition: Used – Good
Comments: 1963 privately preowned copy, no dust jacket, cover is clean with spine discoloration, binding is excellent, pages are clean/unmarked.
Payment complete 1 $146.99

Our usual price on average is $15 for the single volume (before the movie, of course). Pairing the two volumes, whether the issued set or not, does much much better at about $30-$50. Now I wish I had held inventory! You just never know. you don’t have to pay that kind of money. The reprint is out and very affordable. Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

We also sold a Julia Child VHS this week – Way to Cook Vegetables that we have had in inventory forevah along with her The French Chef that never moves (and I still have one in inventory). :)

Love pop media sales!

Thanks for this tip!!! I picked up a first edition Volume 2 Mastering the Art at a yard sale last summer for a quarter. I just looked and it is selling for around $50!

Oh! Actually, that price is $75! I’m getting it listed today!

Hey Ashley,
Congrats on your find!

If you’re willing to wait a bit you can list your copy on Amazon and it will sell for about $150+. That’s assuming you have a very good condition copy including the dust jacket. It’s free to list and then you pay a 15% commission plus $1.35 variable closing fee. It’s something worth considering. Either way it’s not a bad return on a quarter.
:)

Julie Anna,
It is in very good condition, but does not have the dust jacket. I believe it was originally a library copy as it has a call number written on the spine. It also has a small piece of old tape that was stuck at the top. I am sure I could remove that though. Other than that it is in very good condition. Do you think it would still sell well on Amazon?
Ashley
