I was reading Lynn Terry’s blog post Pursue Passion or Profit and started thinking about this concept of pursuing our passions and then the money will follow when we work online. If you have worked online for any length of time you have no doubt heard someone teach that if you write or market in a niche in which you are passionate the money will follow.
I have a couple thoughts about this. The first is that it is always helpful to like what you do. I wouldn’t suggest getting involved in a company or niche where you have products that are all about something you have no interest in or can’t at least whole heartedly endorse. That said, the term passion does not have place in a start up online business especially if you need to make money immediately. Truth told, to say you need to find your passion can actually put up a block to just rolling up your sleeves and getting started doing some kind of work online. It’s better to get started with focus and desire than passion, I think.
I believe that desire – not only desire, but purposeful desire, is where the money follows. A better method to help us in our online endeavors is to focus on our desire and how to get that desire then the money will follow. This is opposed to find your passion and the money will follow. What do you desire? Is it money to pay the bills? Is it money for lessons for the children? Is it a full time comfortable income? Is it being able to set your own hours and work at home? Is it to have a base income which is passive enough to take undetermined amounts of time off?
As explained in chapter two of Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich Barnes had a burning desire to work with Thomas Edison. So much so that he burned all bridges behind him. His desire could be termed as a dream or goal, but it was laser focused.
Is your desire to make money online directed and purposeful enough to focus and work hard?
In some cases, to quit that other job which is acting like a safety net may be the motivation needed to make an online business work for you. Your desire becomes so consuming you have no choice but to succeed. Feeding your family is great motivation to make money online.
From Hill’s book: But desiring riches with a state of mind that becomes an obsession, then planning definite ways and means to acquire riches, and backing those plans with persistence which does not recognize failure, will bring riches.
Based on one of my favorite business reads, Think and Grow Rich, I’m going to do a series of posts which cover the steps which Hill covers in chapter two under the heading Desire. These steps should help you turn your desire to succeed online a reality.
The steps as explained in his book are:
First. Be definite as to the amount. (There is a psychological reason for definiteness which will be explained).
Second. Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. (There is no such reality as “something for nothing.)
Third. Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money you desire.
Fourth. Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action. This step will take a few posts since there are several plans one can pursue online.
Fifth. Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.
While you’re thinking about these steps think about this excerpt I read in Hill’s book.
The business depression marked the death of one age, and the birth of another. This changed world requires practical dreamers who can, and will put their dreams into action. The practical dreamers have always been, and always will be the pattern-makers of civilization.
Our current recession marks a turning point for the business owner. You may be reading this blog because your husband was laid off and you need to know how to make money quickly. You may have been laid off yourself and need income right away. No more are we in a land of huge corporations ruling with the lure of long employment laden with benefits and a promise of retirement. The small business owner who desires to work online has a chance to grow in this economy. It will take a shift in thinking, however. I’ll help you with the mental shift throughout my series of posts on this subject so bookmark or sign up for notifications on my posts now.

Excellent post, Julie Anna! I love the quotes from Napoleon Hill. It was reading Think and Grow Rich that really took my business to a whole new level, and I have highly recommended it to everyone I have met since.
I look forward to following your series!
Hi Julia,
Your timing is excellent with this post. I am struggling with the same idea and the more I try not to focus on the money, the more I do! I don’t think I’m greedy, I just want to be home with my son full-time. I LOVE the line about getting rid of the safety net. Easier said than done, YES, but as my Mom just told me last week, sometimes that safety net can keep you from moving forward. The practical person I was taught to be makes is really hard, yet there is so much frustration about not being able to give the amount of time to my online goals BECAUSE of my day job. Thanks for being able to tap into that reality for me and help me see that I’m not the only one thinking/worried about it.
Hi Tammie~
So glad to see you’re still pursuing this desire of yours. I clicked onto your blog and you’re going gangbusters for sure. It is scary and I know I’ve recommended some fantastic people to you in the past who can help with different aspects of internet business. Lynn is another one of those very genuine helpful people. Lynn and the group can help you more specifically with affiliate and information marketing with your blog. It appears you are getting great traffic there, we just need to monetize that traffic. Check out her free SSWT forums and perhaps join us on Tuesday’s webinar. It’s free! Then you’ll get a small taste of the Elites (private membership) forum and how helpful it can be.
Hi Again, Julie Anna
You are so kind to respond back and I have always cherished your willingness to help!. I don’t know if you read my very first post on my blog but I mentioned you! You were the start of my realization that 1) yes this can be done and 2) I need to think in MULTIPLES (regarding streams of income) and I am so grateful for it. Thank you for the link to the webinar and I’ve already got my husband checking the library for Hill’s book ;0)
God bless you in all that you do.
Tammie
Hi Tammie,
I have several hard copies, including daily inspirations and workbooks on Hill’s original work, but you can also download a free PDF copy by doing a search on google. I have this in addition to my hard copies, which I printed & put in a 3 ring binder. I consider this one my personal copy and have a lot of highlighting & notes in it
Great to meet you here & See you on the webinar!
-Lynn
Hi Lynn!
So nice to meet you and I’m glad you told me that. We had put in for a waiting list at our public library. I had no idea you could get it free online!
I also wanted to let you know that I’ve visited your site and am very excited about getting your newsletters. I wish I could go to the webinar but it’s right smack in the middle of my workday here. But I will surely look forward to the forums!
Tammie
Tammie, if you join Lynn Terrys Elite members, you will learn that she has just started a evening session possibilty. Only once a month and it has already been held for this month. I was going to do a tinyURL and include my aff url, but since you might consider that tafky I won’t. However I’m sure that if you told Lynn that Robert Nelson referred you I would probably get credit. In any case the important thing is that you join up, and start benefiting from the recorded webinars, personal help, yes even from Lynn herself,
