How to Sell Used Books – A Chip Hilton Sports Story

by Julie Anna on March 5, 2010

I often get asked, “How do I sell used books?” If you learn how to sell children’s used books online you’ll find a great way to make money. I love doing what I do. I am highlighting yet another children’s vintage book you have likely passed up at the yard sales and thrift stores – a Chip Hilton Story. This will be an ongoing series about which books you will always make money selling on eBay. The first of the easy to find gems was this post. Next I have a hardcover to tell you about which is likely to appear in your wanderings.

sell used books A Chip Hilton Sports Story – Comeback Cagers by Clair Bee. This is a pictorial hardcover and it  was published in 1963 by Grosset and Dunlap.  A chapter book found in the young adult section of the library,  we sold it this month for a whopping $155! Ours was a first edition indicated by the published works list listing to itself on the front end page. The series is quite popular again for the baby boomer collectors and had a subsequent print run with a tweed cover and dust jackets. The valuable titles are Hungry Hurler from the baseball series, Backcourt Ace, and our mentioned title from the basketball series.

From Wikipedia: William “Chip” Hilton is the central character in a series of 24 sports novels for adolescent boys written by the successful college basketball coach and 1968 Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Clair Bee (1896-1983). In addition to Bee’s authorship of the Chip Hilton series, he was also the author of several basketball and coaching technique books. The Chip Hilton series was published between 1948 and 1965 by Grosset & Dunlap, with Bee’s last manuscript, Fiery Fullback, published in 2002.

The series hero excels in football, basketball and baseball, and is often placed in the position of persuading his less-than-perfect teammates to play his way and share his values–with winning championships being the result. Stories have two or three subplots, sometimes unrelated to sports, and one title is distinguished for tackling racism. The Chip Hilton books sold 2.2 million copies,[1] and, in 1997, the NCAA founded the Chip Hilton Player of the Year Award.

In the late 1990s, the series was re-issued by a Nashville religious book publishing house with the co-operation of Bee’s children. The re-issue caused a furor among fans and purists with its politically correct update and its down-home Christian evangelical flavor.[1] The original series is highly collectible, with some titles being worth hundreds of dollars.

Again, these books were published pretty broadly. Do pick up the library discards. While the exlibrary copies aren’t as valuable as the trade editions, you still will do well with them.
